I have never heard anyone say “I don’t want to be happy!”
Seeking and longing for happiness is in our nature. The sources of our happiness are as diverse, different and unique as we, humans are. We all seek and find happiness in about everything and anything, from a warm hug to a welcoming smile, from a pat in the back to a big fat bonus, etc. Happiness comes in all shapes, forms and sizes, and we all know what tickles our fancy or bring us the simplest yet strongest squeeze in the heart. We all know what gives us butterflies in the belly and makes our knees weak.
Happiness can be as simple or as complicated as we make it. Our mind sets the limitations and the possibilities that we allow it to.
It is right here within you and around you, you just have to make it a priority and go for it! As eloquently written by Zig Ziglar “Your attitude, not your aptitude, will determine your altitude” Here are a few attitudes that are common to happy people, may you adopt them and create your own.
Happy People:
1- Practice mindfulness
Be present, savor every second of your life while accepting yourself and others. Stay away from the past as you are wiser today than you where yesterday. Besides, the past is often a very harsh judge that only helps you condemn yourself over things that you can never change.
2- Create their tribe
Our tribe is usually made of people we chose and those who are brought to us by life. It is your right and duty to choose who to keep close or at an arm length for your own sanity and happiness. Create your world with the right people, the ones who do not drain your energy nor ask too much of you. Surround yourself with people who share common goals and ideals, people who will push you out of your comfort zone toward excellence.
3- Accept that they are imperfect
Perfection is a journey, not a status nor a position to hold. You may be perfect for one a person or a group or a situation but you can NEVER please everyone. So, embrace your qualities as much as your areas of improvement to better yourself. You are not damaged, you do not need to be fixed, you are “You”, just the way you are. Just keep aiming at bettering yourself.
4- Practice self-care
We feed our body because hunger hurts, we can feel the physical pain. However, we often ignore our mind’s needs until it starts shutting down our physical capabilities. Take care of your body, mind and soul to maintain a happy and well-balanced life because you can only ignore the signs for a little while until it prevents you from doing anything at all.
5- Separate needs from wants
As a child, the new toy is the new favorite, it is the best toy ever! That has not change when we became adult and often time it is at the source of a lot of our troubles such as financial, relationship, etc. Defining the clear distinction between your needs and your wants in order to prioritize your next decision is KEY to living a well-balanced life.
6- Are grateful for what they have
Wanting more is in our nature, it is in fact what keeps us going forward, progressing and have a sense of accomplishment. However, never forget to appreciate your daily blessings and what you already have regardless of how imperfect it may seem.
7- Make sure their conscience is a pillow at night
Statistics and studies have shown how sleep is very important to mental health. Live so your actions or reactions don’t keep you up at night. Keep your emotions, actions and reactions in check to assure a clear conscience and a peaceful mind because nothing else matters more.
8- Practice self-reflection
Take the time to practice retrospection. Take the time to meet and get to know yourself, look deep inside to understand yourself, your emotions, your strength, weaknesses, what motivates you as well as what demotivates you. Get to know and understand your character and personality, as it is the way to love yourself.
9- Forgive and not forget
Forgive yourself for your mistakes and forgive others who hurt you. Free your mind of those who wronged you but make sure you don’t forget. Be sure to learn your lesson and be equipped to guard your happiness, your peace and your well-being.
10- Knows their triggers
One thing that always pops our bubble of happiness is the loop created by the things that upset us (triggers), our reactions and the outcome. Know your triggers to anticipate the tornadoes and if you can’t prevent them, control your reactions for a different outcome. Most importantly, always focus on keeping your happiness and peace.
11- Distinguish the big rocks from the pebbles and sand
We all live a busy life; the world is loud and eventful. Prioritizing the components of your life is an act of survival. Define and distinguish your big rocks the things that give meaning to your life from the small ones based on your reality and not the world’s criteria. Always value and place the big one first whether it is and everything else will fall into place.
12- Not afraid of change
If life was static or repetitive, we would be bored to death. Changes can be scary, inconvenient and uncomfortable, but despite all that, they are what take us to the next best thing. Think about the major events that marked your life, they all happened because a change occurred. Focus on learning your lesson and growing with the change.

13- Don’t hold grudges
Holding grudges put a painful situation caused by someone on repeat with no hope to erase it nor fix it. You created a dungeon for yourself and that person is the Guard. You are empowering someone, stop it and take your power back, feel the pain, cry if you must but move on and enjoy life to the fullest.
14- Enjoy time with themselves
Don’t be afraid to be alone with yourself. Do not confuse being alone with loneliness. Love yourself and your company so you can understand your value and not cut yourself short. Enjoy the silence, the freedom and the clarity of silence. Be happy with yourself and by yourself, enjoy your favorite meal, admire nature, etc.
15- Understand that life is short
Savor each moment like it was the last one, the best time is now as tomorrow remains a wish. Hug, kiss, love, laugh, and live like it was the very last time you would get to or like your life depended on it… Well, your life, your happiness depend on it! Live today to the fullest and live2byou.

Love this. In today’s day and age it’s very easy to forget what’s truly important and to compare your life to others. Thanks for sharing these humbling tips. 😀

Indeed Jen, being grateful for we have helps us see how blessed and fortunate we are. We often focus on what we don’t have which creates our misery while we are surrounded by blessings and greatness.
